"Green Play: Integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through Sport and Digital Innovation" developed by
UNEFS & Dinamo1948
is an applied research and innovation project that investigates innovative ways to integrate education for sustainable development into university sports activities. The project uses sport as an experimental environment for testing interdisciplinary educational interventions, combining physical activity, non-formal education and digital technologies, with the aim of generating knowledge, replicable models and good practices in the fields of education, sport and sustainability.

Sustainable Skills for Tomorrow
"Advancing ESD through Digital Innovation in Polytechnic Education" develped by
UPB &....
Climate change, social inequality, and public health crises demand transformative approaches in education. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to act responsibly for a sustainable future. While ESD is often taught in environmental or civic subjects, its integration into digital and experiential learning models offers a powerful innovation.
Emerging technologies—AI analytics, VR/AR immersive experiences, and wearable sensors—enable learners to engage directly with sustainability challenges. By simulating real-world dilemmas and encouraging critical reflection, these tools foster not only cognitive knowledge but also ethical, social, and environmental responsibility.

Goals
-
Empowering Minds - Integrating education for sustainable development through sports and educational activities.
-
Design and implement an interactive curriculum that links sustainability challenges with digital, experiential learning.
-
Apply digital tools (AI platforms, VR/AR eco-simulations, wearable monitoring) to enhance students’ understanding of sustainability.
-
Evaluate the impact of digital ESD interventions on learners’ awareness, teamwork, and eco-friendly behavior.
-
Produce an open-access ESD toolkit (lesson plans, digital resources, teacher guidelines) for broader use
-
Use competitions (football, basketball, etc.) as educational tools to promote the responsible use of resources and fair play.
-
Reduce environmental impact by using recycled materials and encouraging recycling in activities.
-
Facilitate understanding of the relationship through workshops and thematic sessions integrated into the program.
-
Use digital tools to simulate the impact of activities on the environment and increasing participant involvement.
-
Encourage recycling activities and donations for children from vulnerable backgrounds, promoting empathy and civic spirit.
-
Positioning as an educational model, replicable platform and example of an event with educational, social and environmental impact.
Supporting sustainability efforts and educating communities on eco-friendly practices.

Key concepts
Sustainability
• Sustainability is an interconnected and multidimensional framework for addressing the challenges of the twenty-first century.
• The concept has evolved from ecological concerns to encompass environmental stewardship, social well-being, and economic vitality.
• A common definition emphasizes humanity’s responsibility to protect natural capital and ensure equitable opportunities for future generations.
• Different categories of sustainability include:
1) Environmental sustainability: focuses on climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion;
2) Economic sustainability: advocates for long-term growth models that maintain ecological and social integrity;
3) Social sustainability: emphasizes well-being, justice, inclusion, and equity in society.
• The "triple bottom line" serves as a moral compass for public policy and corporate governance.
• The proliferation of sustainability standards and frameworks, such as ISO norms and the Sustainable Development Goals, indicates a shift towards greater accountability and performance measurement.
• Sustainability reporting enhances ethical practices and contributes to organizational resilience.
• Sustainability indicators, including environmental, social, and economic metrics, help decision-makers identify strengths and weaknesses in systems.
• Achieving sustainability involves coordinated efforts in education, governance, and technology, promoting long-term thinking and ethical responsibility.
• Future sustainability will guide strategic decisions and reinvent development pathways, fostering resilience and promoting an equitable, environmentally conscious future.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
• Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is presented as a vital element that transforms sustainability from theory into practice.
• ESD provides individuals with knowledge, values, competencies, and ethical frameworks to handle complexity and change.
• It focuses on developing systems thinking, creativity, collaboration, and responsibility to tackle global challenges like climate change and social inequality.
• The chapter emphasizes that ESD is transformative, favoring participatory and experiential learning, engaging learners as active contributors.
• Key pedagogical approaches include critical reflection, futures thinking, community engagement, and interdisciplinary problem-solving.
• ESD aligns with global frameworks such as UNESCO’s ESD for 2030, which positions education as essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
• Important priority areas include policy integration, teacher capacity building, youth empowerment, and holistic institutional approaches.
• Values-based Education for Sustainable Development (VbESD) focuses on ethics and character as crucial for sustainable behavior.
• Education 4.0 adapts ESD for the digital age, promoting innovation and preparedness for green economies.
• Digital transformation and leadership are essential for effective ESD, requiring leaders to create inclusive and agile educational environments.
• Emphasizes that technology should complement pedagogical goals, ensuring it enhances human development.
• Sustainable education benefits from adaptive organizational cultures that promote co-creation and continuous learning.
• ESD is framed as a strategy for societal transformation, fostering ethically grounded and socially responsible citizens.
• Education is depicted as a driving force for creating equitable, resilient, and ecologically sustainable futures.
Technology in Education for Sustainable Development
• Technology is a transformative force in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), enhancing learning, collaboration, and engagement .
• Integration of digital solutions such as virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics makes ESD more accessible and impactful.
• It shifts learning from passive to interactive and learner-centered experiences, with VR and AR creating immersive ecological simulations
• AI personalizes learning pathways while gamification engages students in solving sustainability challenges.
• IoT-enabled smart campuses serve as practical labs for observing sustainability practices like energy efficiency and waste reduction.
• Technology connects global learners and educators, facilitating participation in sustainability dialogues and real-time collaborations.
• Data-driven decision-making through big data and learning analytics supports monitoring and optimizing educational strategies and sustainability metrics.
• Despite its benefits, rapid digitalization presents challenges, including the digital divide and environmental costs, necessitating responsible technology practices.
• Strong digital leadership and adaptive cultures are crucial for effective technology integration in ESD.
• Technology should be viewed as a dynamic ecosystem that models sustainability itself, showcasing principles through smart campuses and energy-efficient infrastructures.
• The integration of technology in ESD is most effective when it centers on learners, democratizes access, promotes global partnerships, and maintains ethical standards
